S. Skukerman

This is one of those rare times I stepped out of the Victorian/Edwardian period. It was late at night, and I found myself looking through vintage mug shots of criminals (as you do), and among the usual rogue's gallery of scary faces was this slight, snake-like man who looked coiled and ready to strike at any time. Almost cartoonish. Although he didn't have the same physical stature as the others, he could send a shiver up your spine just by looking at him. So, I used him as a reference for this piece.

His name was Sydney Skukerman. This is a Police mugshot. NSW Police Gazette, Sydney, Australia. S.  Skukerman (alias Kukarman, alias Cecil Landan) was captioned 'obtains goods from warehousemen by falsely representing that he is in business.'

But I think I read somewhere else that he was arrested for accounting fraud. Anyway, whatever it was, in my imagination, I've recast him as a diabolical mastermind who was caught on these lesser charges.

With that name and that look, I really had to redraw him as a snake, didn't I?

Each original illustration is carefully hand drawn in pencil. Once finished, I hand age and treat them with various dye methods, to resemble an old dusty antique photograph. I want this series to suggest something that was rediscovered by you. An inherited artifact from a mysterious benefactor? Or perhaps revealed in a long abandoned attic, lying at the bottom of a chest. Buried beneath old dusty clothes and fading hand written notes.
