'And You Are?'
I present my card and am ushered forward to a tightly packed group of well-dressed Gentlemen flamingos—so tight that if one were to fall, the sheer weight of the others would inevitably hold them up.
I cleared my throat.
"Excuse me, is this the order of Crimson feathers?" but no one noticed. I cleared it again, only slightly louder this time. A single member of the tightly packed group broke rank and sidled up to me.
"And you are?"
"Portnay Claude Timperly, How do you do Sir." I offered my card again.
There followed a series of complex, swift feather flutterings that, when completed, formed the secret handshake.
The tall flamingo peered at me through his monocle and looked me up, down, and then up again. He eventually said, "Hmm...Sir Algenon Shivley."
"No. Portnay Claude Timperly, ...I was hoping to "
"Indeed," he abruptly interrupted.
"Yes, we've already established who YOU are, dear boy. It is I who am Sir Algenon Shivley." said Sir Algenon Shivley.
"Oh, terribly sorry. I'm a little nervous. This is the first gentlemen's Club I have belonged to."
"Steady on, old boy. You don't belong yet. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, shall we?
Turning slowly, he gestured to the other flamingoes, who remained huddled in a tight pack. "I say, chaps, come and meet Mr. Timbery."
"It's Timperly. Mr. Timperly," I stuttered.
"Hello, Kimberly. It's jolly good to meet you. Where did you say you went to school again?" said one rather stout flamingo.
"Well, I didn't actually...say I mean...I did go to school...I mean, I haven't said which one yet. In fact, I..."
"First class, Tomborny, First class," said another flamingo. " And were you ever in the guards?"
"The guards?" I said rather confusedly. "which guards?"
"THE guards, my old man, THE guards."
A fourth came around and put his wing on my shoulder. "Come with me, old chap; I want you to meet a splendid fellow....oh, Steed.....Steed"
A sartorially elegant flamingo turned slowly to asses me. He had a charming smile and wore a bowler hat at a slightly jaunty angle....this fellow says he was in the guards."
"The guards," said Steed through a grinning smile
"Yes, THE guards," said the flamingo. Fellow says his name is Bombrey."
