This was actually based on a real store where I used to live in Santa Barbara, California .But it could take place anywhere really. It's the swan song of a world that is slowly dying. Replaced by big box stores, franchises, and fast food giants. The owner 'Ernie,' looks on in growing recognition of his own inevitable fate.
This painting is part of a set. When aligned next to 'When Worlds Collide, Pt II' it follow the same perspective. The figures in both paintings are looking at each other.
